IBM SVC Spectrum Virtualize Case Studies:

IBM Spectrum Virtualize storage systems are designed to centralize all storage management functions and ease migration activity. While the Spectrum Virtualize management ecosystem simplifies these activities, it often masks significant complexity. When performance issues occur they are often difficult to diagnose and resolve because of the lack of visibility into each of the underlying areas. IntelliMagic Vision simplifies the process of identifying performance issues and uncovering root causes within the IBM Spectrum Virtualize ecosystem. The following videos were created based on real customer situations in order to illustrate how IntelliMagic Vision enables performance diagnosis in your IBM Spectrum Virtualize ecosystem.

Should I Disable SVC Write Cache?

It has been suggested that in order to maximize throughput for large sequential operations on SVC volumes residing entirely on IBM Flash systems, you should consider disabling the write cache. During this case study, we look at whether this was true for our customers' workload and demonstrate how disabling the SVC write cache can be detrimental to the performance of your SVC environment.

Disaster Recovery - Execution VS Plan

Most businesses have a disaster recovery plan that they can execute if a crisis occurs at the primary site. For one of our customers, they replicated updates to a secondary site and then made a copy of the updates periodically such that they could recover quickly if needed. Without backing up the replicated data they had no point in time to recover to, and their DR plan was worthless. It is not about how good your plan is, it is about how good your execution is.

Is Compression Hurting Performance?

In this case study we want to show how to identify if compression is causing performance issues in your Spectrum Virtualize environment, and if so, what to do about it. This real world case study shows how enabling SVC compression on the wrong volumes can lead to performance impacts.

Downstream Congestion

This case study involves a situation where a bottleneck on the SVC back-end storage caused high response times on the front-end, similar to when an accident on the freeway that is miles ahead can cause slow-downs where you are at. We demonstrate how IntelliMagic Vision leverages intelligence and logical to physical resource mapping to quickly detect bottlenecks and identify root cause for performance issues on IBM Spectrum Virtualize environments.

Noisy Neighbors: Identifying Root Cause of Performance Issues for SVC

This real world case study, run on an IBM Flash 840, is analogous to noisy neighbors in a real world neighborhood in which a few bad neighbors can disrupt the harmony of the entire neighborhood. In this case, just a few bad LUNs had a profound effect on the I/O experience of the SVC environment.
